Chedworth Roman Villa is one of the best known Romano-British villa sites in Britain.
It was discovered and excavated in 1864, and has been on display to the public since that time. The villa became a National Trust property in 1924.
The site lies in a beautiful wooded combe overlooking the valley of the River Coln. A natural spring rises at the head of the combe, and the presence of a source of pure fresh water was probably the main reason why the villa was built in this spot.
The house itself was begun about 120AD, starting life as at least three separate buildings. Over the course of nearly three centuries the Villa evolved into the grand 4th Century mansion whose ruins can be seen today.
Today you can see the ruins of this 1600 year old “stately home”, and imagine yourself back in the 4th Century. As you look at the surviving mosaics, the hypocausts (Roman underfloor central heating), bath-houses, latrine, water-shrine and of course the many objects in site museum, you can get a flavour of life when Britain was part of the Roman Empire.
